Replacing a door handle is usually quite manageable, as long as the dimensions and lock type are correct. Measure first, then order.
Supplies
- Tape measure or caliper
- Appropriate screwdriver or Allen key
- Pencil and possibly masking tape
- Product dimensions of the new set
Step 1: Determine the type of lock
Check if the door has no lock opening, a traditional keyhole, a profile cylinder, or a WC/bathroom lock. This determines which rosette or plate you need.
Step 2: Measure the door thickness
Measure the door leaf without protruding rosettes or plates. Compare the measurement with the specified range of the product and the length of the fasteners and spindle.
Step 3: Measure the spindle
The square spindle connects both door handles to the lock. Measure the width of the existing spindle and check if the new set uses the same size.
Step 4: Measure the rosette or plate
Note the width, height, or diameter. For a plate, also measure the distance between the center of the handle spindle and the center of the key, cylinder, or WC opening.
Step 5: Check existing screw holes
Measure the center-to-center distance: from the middle of one drill hole to the middle of the other. Check if new rosettes cover the old holes and impressions.
Step 6: Disassemble and compare
Open the door, loosen the set screws, and remove the handles and cover plates. Place the old and new hardware side by side and compare the spindle, holes, rosette, or plate before drilling new holes.
Step 7: Assemble without tension
Place the spindle and both handles directly opposite each other. Tighten screws evenly, but prevent the rosette or plate from warping. Then test if the handle springs back freely and the latch moves smoothly.
