For a furniture handle, the center-to-center dimension is the most important mounting dimension. This is the distance from the center of one screw hole to the center of the other screw hole. Measure this distance in millimeters, not the total length of the handle.
Measuring the center-to-center dimension
- Open the cabinet or drawer and remove one existing handle if necessary.
- Measure from the center of the first drill hole to the center of the second drill hole.
- Note the measurement in millimeters, for example, 96, 128, 160, or 305 mm.
- Additionally, check the total length, width, and projection of the new handle.
- Compare the length of the supplied screws with the thickness of the front or drawer.
Reusing existing holes
If you want to replace without re-drilling, choose exactly the same center-to-center dimension. A longer handle can better cover old marks or discoloration, as long as the drilling distance remains the same. For single-point knobs, there is no center-to-center dimension; there, you check the diameter of the drill hole and the thickness of the furniture front.
Drilling new holes
Use a drilling template and mark both holes from one fixed reference edge. Before drilling, check that the handle is straight and that the screws on the inside do not touch a drawer runner or hinge. Drill with a suitable wood drill bit and work without excessive pressure to minimize splintering.
Which size fits which application?
The size is partly a design choice. On small drawers, a compact handle often appears calmer; wide drawers and tall cabinet doors usually require more grip. Also consider protruding parts, walking space, and the possibility of comfortably grasping the handle with your whole hand.
Comparing material and finish
Black, stainless steel, aluminum, wood, and antique finishes each demand a different look and maintenance. For multiple pieces of furniture, choose the same finish or consciously build a repeatable contrast. Check product photos and specifications per variant, as color and size may vary within one product.
